Visit to School-Gymnasium №159
Purpose of the Visit
The visit to School-Gymnasium №159 was organized to observe and learn from the practical experience of an IB MYP candidate school, with a particular focus on the implementation of Approaches to Learning (ATL). The aim was to deepen our understanding of how ATL skills are developed and embedded in both classroom instruction and extracurricular activities.
Seminar Focus and Content
The seminar was focused on the role of ATL skills in the IB MYP and their practical application across subjects. Teachers from School-Gymnasium №159 shared their approaches to:
Integrating ATL skills into daily classroom practice
Planning lessons and units with explicit ATL skill development
Supporting student agency and reflection
Linking ATL skills to extracurricular activities and school events
The sessions included presentations, classroom examples, and open discussions.
Our teachers observed lessons and reviewed examples of student work that demonstrated how ATL skills are actively developed. Particular attention
was given to:
Communication, collaboration, and thinking skills in classroom activities
Self-management and research skills through projects and independent tasks
Student engagement and responsibility for learning
Consistent use of ATL language by both teachers and students
These observations provided valuable insights into effective and practical strategies for ATL implementation.
The visit to School-Gymnasium №159 was a successful professional learning experience. Observing the school’s practice and sharing experiences strengthened professional collaboration and contributed to a deeper understanding of ATL implementation in the IB MYP. Such exchanges support continuous improvement and the effective development of student learning skills.
