Service as Action
Project Overview:
As part of the IB MYP Service as Action initiative, students actively participated in meaningful community service projects that combined creativity, environmental awareness, and social responsibility. These initiatives provided students with valuable hands-on experiences, fostering their sense of empathy and commitment to making a positive impact on society.
1. Greenhouse Product Fair: "Tasty Produce from the Greenhouse"
Students engaged in natural sciences, biology, and ecology courses cultivated various plants such as dill, mint, and parsley in the school greenhouse. They took full responsibility for planting, maintaining, and harvesting the crops. To promote sustainable living and healthy eating, the students organized a fair titled "Tasty Produce from the Greenhouse," where they sold their organically grown products.
The school staff and parents enthusiastically supported this initiative by purchasing the fresh and eco-friendly produce. The most significant achievement of this project was that all proceeds from the sales were donated to a charitable cause, reinforcing the students' understanding of social responsibility and the importance of giving back to the community.
2. Charity Art Fair: Merging Creativity with Service
Students combined their artistic skills with charitable giving by creating unique handmade crafts and artwork during their visual arts classes. These carefully crafted items were displayed and sold at a charity fair, with all collected funds directed towards supporting individuals in need.
This initiative provided students with an opportunity to showcase their creativity while engaging in meaningful social action. The event was met with great support from parents, teachers, and fellow students, all of whom contributed to the cause by purchasing the handmade products.
3. Gift Donation to "Shapagat" Center
As a continuation of the fundraising efforts, students and school staff visited the "Shapagat" Center, located in the Alatau District of Almaty (Kokkaynar microdistrict, A. Mambetov Street 79/1). Using the funds collected from the charity fairs, they purchased gifts and essential items for children with disabilities residing at the center.
The visit was scheduled to coincide with International Women's Day, making it an even more special occasion. Students personally delivered the gifts, interacted with the children, and gained valuable insights into the significance of kindness and compassion. This experience left a lasting impression on the students, inspiring them to continue engaging in service-oriented activities in the future.
Impact and Reflections:
These Service as Action projects allowed students to develop key IB Learner Profile attributes such as caring, principled, and reflective. They recognized the power of collective effort in addressing societal needs and experienced the fulfillment that comes from helping others.
The success of these initiatives demonstrates the importance of service learning in the IB MYP. Moving forward, students have expressed their commitment to actively participate in similar projects, further strengthening their role as responsible global citizens.
